Acne, or acne vulgaris, is a skin problem that starts when oil and dead skin cells clog up your pores. It is often called blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, blemishes, or zits. A mild form of acne is when you see a few red spots or pimples usually on your face. Severe acne can include hundreds of pimples that can cover the face, neck, chest, and back. It can also be larger, solid, red lumps that are painful (cysts).

Acne is very common among teens. This is because hormone changes make the skin oilier after puberty starts. Most people outgrow their acne as they proceed to adulthood. Women, who have never had acne as a child will begin to experience when they are adults, usually right before their menstrual periods. The good news is that there are many good treatments that can help you get acne under control. Acne starts when oil and dead skin cells clog the skin's pores and if germs get into the pores it result in the swelling, redness, and pus you experience during an outbreak. When addressing you acne problem, use skin products that don't clog your pores - they will say "non-comedogenic" on the label.

Using oil-based skin products or cosmetics can make acne worse. Acne can run in families. If one of your parents had severe acne, you are more likely to get it too! Symptoms of acne include pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads and can occur on the face, neck, shoulders, back, or chest.
Pimples that are large and deep are called cystic lesions. These can be painful if they get infected. They also can scar the skin. If you have one of these, it is important that you contact a dermatologist right away.

In order to better control your acne, keep your skin clean. Avoid skin products that clog your pores and wash your skin once or twice a day with a gentle soap or acne wash. Try not to scrub or pick at your pimples as this can make it worse and can cause long lasting scars. It can take time to get acne under control. If, after 3 months, you haven't had good results with nonprescription products Call Us! A prescription gel or skin cream may be all you need; if you are a woman, taking certain birth control pills may also help. If you have acne cysts, our doctors may suggest a stronger medicine or alternative treatments.
